Akasaka Restaurant

The Akasaka Restaurant (旅荘赤坂) stands right next to the love hotel of the same name, on the shore of Tamako Lake. The pairing was surely no accident: dinner on one side, discretion next door. The two businesses seem to have lived and died together, along with the little cluster of lakeside leisure spots around them.

It is not a spectacular ruin on its own: a modest building giving in to the vegetation, its interior stripped by time and visitors. But together with its neighbors, it tells a very Showa story, from a time when a lake in the suburbs was a destination, and a night out came with a room with a view.
