Despite its futuristic name, the Bibai Bio Center was a food-processing factory. Little has ever been written about it: no famous scandal, no dramatic closure. It is just one of the many workplaces that quietly shut down as Hokkaido’s industrial towns shrank, leaving its tanks, pipes and conveyor lines to stop where they stood. It is, above all, an awesome visit in winter. Snow buries the access road, drifts pile against the walls and sift in through the broken windows, and the cold turns the whole factory into a still, white freezer of itself. That is how I photographed it, and that is how I would recommend it.
