Zenko-ji is an abandoned temple located in Ibaraki Prefecture. Japan has more than seventy thousand Buddhist temples, and a growing share of them have no resident priest and shrinking congregations. When the last caretaker goes, the buildings are simply left to the weather. Zenko-ji is one of those quiet casualties. Nothing dramatic ever happened here, and that is the point. Abandoned places of worship have a hush that other ruins don’t. The structure is still holding its shape while the forest closes in around it, and walking the grounds you can read the whole story in the moss: a temple doesn’t collapse, it dissolves, offering by offering, tile by tile.
